Navigating Health Risks in a Changing Climate

Project Overview

In the face of escalating climate challenges like heatwaves and air pollution, current adaptive measures are proving insufficient. With this in mind, the EU-funded healthRiskADAPT project will pioneer transformative adaptation strategies across Europe. Focused on Mediterranean, Alpine, and Continental regions, healthRiskADAPT project seeks to revolutionize how we tackle climate-related health risks. By integrating technical, nature-based, and social solutions, the project empowers local authorities to assess vulnerabilities, prioritize actions, and enhance preparedness. This comprehensive approach includes developing user-friendly toolkits and engaging stakeholders to ensure effective implementation. With its ambitious goals and innovative methods, healthRiskADAPT project stands poised to lead Europe towards a healthier, climate-resilient future.

Project expectations

healthRiskADAPT project will assess and generate a series of climatic hazard indicators on different temporal and spatial scales in order to enrich the available hazard indicators which will help end users to more effectively analyse climate risks that can affect human health.

healthRiskADAPT project will assess and generate a series of health indicators (cause-specific morbidity and mortality) associated with exposure to hazards of heatwaves, air pollution (including wildfire emissions) and pollen taking into account contextual factors (e.g., socioeconomic, environmental, health systems, pre-existing health conditions) in order to provide cheaper, faster and more reliable health risk assessment services with vulnerability and risk indices at multiple levels of granularity for regional and local level application tailoring, operational and management, preparedness of the health system (e.g., early warning and fast response) and strategic pathway planning.

healthRiskADAPT project will provide a suite of toolkits in an interactive dashboard to assist regional/local authorities in developing, implementing, and monitoring climate change adaptation plans. The dashboard will provide detailed information on hazards, risks, health indicators, vulnerabilities, and adaptation measures with cost-benefit analyses. It will enable users to quickly evaluate the impact of various interventions at a local and regional level, and will target increased user engagement, lower development costs, and a faster process in tailoring solutions. These toolkits can also be integrated into Climate-DAPT for wider deployment.

healthRiskADAPT project will customize and provide adaptation measures that integrate the suite of technological, nature-based, and social for both indoor and outdoor environments, addressing the complex socio ecological issues in different regions while increasing resilience to potential impacts that will help to mitigate the effect of climate change on health and human wellbeing.
